EAMES CHAIR FABRICATION

Herman Miller hosted this design competition “Modern Classic” in which they invited designers to reimagine or augment the iconic Charles and Ray Eames Shell chair. My partner and I used modern techniques to build a skin for the outside of the chair. We reverse engineered the chair’s shape using a Faro Microscribe. We simulated the forces of sitting, leaning, and fidgeting to determine where it was sensible to drill holes without changing the strength of the chair. We 3D printed a honeycomb that visually represented these forces and attached it to the chair. This chair sold at auction and is currently housed in the Herman Miller Richmond office.
